Travel - SA Weekends.com
If you've ever thought about a weekend away (and who hasn't?), this is the place to go. The site is put together by travel journalist, Bridget Hilton-Barber, and she has lots to say. The design is funky and the categories are fun. Think Gay, Soul, Lovers, Legends and Outdoors. Another good bit is the ability to choose where you are coming from before deciding on a venue. The only negative is the size - sections are put together for larger screens and don't adapt to the smaller sizes.

Design - 3d&i
Take a closer look at how little Thembi positions her Froot Loops, you may just have a designer on your hands. Then let her loose on this site where the focus is on learning about the world of design, from buildings to fashion. There are also activities, such as creating logos, and viewers can read about the history of various designs. The target group is the 9-12 year old, with three key areas: Discover, Design and Discuss. Have a look at the section for teachers and parents.

Grammar - Punctuation made Simple
Loads of people experience a twinge of anxiety when putting pen to paper and, often, it has everything to do with punctuation. This is where the Web site, 'Punctuation made Easy', comes in. The content explains a few of these English conventions. Expect the stylish basics - an introduction, information on the colon, semicolon, comma, dash and apostrophe. The formatting of the copy and the simple logo belies a design understanding that goes far beyond most other university sites.

Perfume - The Fragrance Foundation
Dabbing scent on your body so that you can smell like something else (like a spicy wood stick) is a wee bit strange. But it happens. It's called perfume and it is a multimillion-dollar international business. Even better, there is a Web site dedicated to expanding the appreciation, use and sales of fragrance globally. The Fragrance Foundation is the non-profit educational arm of the international fragrance industry. Find out more about it, upcoming events, news features, awards, publications, links, exhibitions and more. A professional design that contains some relevant information.

Toys - B's Rocking Horses
If you yearn for the old days, when toys were toys and the air was free, know that pockets of the old style still exist and this Web site houses one of them. (The irony of this contrast is not lost, of course.) Take time to check out the various rocking horses that have been lovingly made by hand. These are heirloom pieces. You can view them on the site and then request more information. Prices, however, are not available. The site is classic, focused and professional.

Vouchers - Streetcar.com
StreetCar.com takes into account the thousands of ex-pats all around the world who want to send gifts to their loved ones in SA. However, gift baskets are expensive and they never look like the original photo. Take one step back and there is StreetCar.com, a site that offers gift vouchers from affiliate stores. The stores are broken down into geographical locations so that Aunt Mildred doesn't get a voucher for a store 12 hours away.

Weird news - Obscure Store
For daily gossip, news and weird Net stuff, make your way to the Obscure Store. You can learn about the man that refused to leave his rest stop home to teens doing the naughty on their school bus. This is a place to sit back, sip that coffee and congratulate yourself on your apparent normality. The look is simple news, with one main column and side links. Any given link takes you through to the original Web site. Do note that this site is not for the fainthearted.

Conservation - South African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds
SANCCOB is a non-profit organisation, based in Cape Town. It cares for indigenous seabirds that are injured, ill and oiled. This includes raising awareness about conservation. Far from lightweight, they have successfully treated more than 80 000 seabirds and are staffed primarily by volunteers. On the Web site, you will find information on the organisation's history, details on the staff, a photo gallery, how to make a donation and more. The site is simple with some bright colour funk.

Exercise - The Yoga Site
With New Year's resolutions hot on your lips, it's time to think body improvement. However, it doesn't necessarily mean blood, sweat and tears. Toning (and a little sweating) can be done with yoga, the trendy new exercise. This simple Web site dedicates itself to all things yoga. Find out about the different yoga positions. (There are cute little bendy men diagrams to explain further.) You can also find out about the various yoga styles. Do note that this site is US focused.

Arts & Crafts - The Crocodile Ramble
Joburgers should daytrip the Crocodile Ramble. It's a set route dotted with arts and crafts places, venues for eating and sleeping, as well as much more. This simple, yet cute, site will tell you all. Links take you through to a map, what's on, info on the cradle of mankind, and various directories / listings. The Web site is a good example of how an amateur attempt can work. Information is easy to access and the design has an "old world" charm.
